Mendon May Day 1905

Hazel Bird Queen of May

Mendon Celebrates

May Day one of Joyous Festivities, Three Ball Games, May 4th 1905– In spite of the inclemency of the weather, the Mendonites celebrated the First of May with a big time for all. About 9:30 music from Mendon’s Silver Cornet band brought the people from all quarters in holiday attire to the meeting house. Where the exercises were conducted on account of the damp weather. A very enjoyable program was rendered. After music from the band, the crowning of the May Queen was in order, Master Wilford Sorensen acting as arch-bishop and Miss Hazel Bird as queen. The arch-bishops speech was well composed.

The Maids of Honor, looking like roses, and escorts were Chloe Hancock, Myrtle Baker, Ethel Sorensen, Ina Sorensen, Edith Hughes and Ethel Longstroth, Alma Baker, Charles Ladle, Elmer Hancock, Arthur Kidman and George Andersen. In the afternoon a dance was given for the children, including the Maypole dance. On the public square was baseball galore. The first game was between the boys of Mendon and Logan between the ages of twelve and fourteen. Mendon winning by a large score. Mendon team also played with the Wellsville boys, winning against them also. Mendon’s second nine and Logan second team played a good game, Mendon winning by big odds. Then came the game of the day. Mendon’s first nine and Petersboro’s team. This was a very interesting and hard fought game. Score stood seventeen to twenty-one in favor of Petersboro. The day’s sports ended with a big ball in Richards' Hall, a large crowd being in attendance.

Notes…

I added Hazel Bird here and to the Mendon May Queen's listing in May, of 2018, after finding the above article. The competitive baseball spirit was intense and existed for quite some time. The Petersboro team had a lot of Kidman's on it, and at times just went as the Kidman Brothers. They were in fact, quite good in this and many other athletics activies.
