Mendon, April 30th 1926– Our annual May Day celebration will be held Saturday, May 1st, all day. There will be a May queen, consort, maids of honor, and the maypole dance. Dance and sports in the afternoon closing with a dance in the evening, good music, all are invited.
Interview– "There was no flower girl or crown bearer in those days, that was started at a later time." Mozelle and Owen Sorensen noted as they related the anxious story about waiting for the strawberry ice-cream to come in to Mendon on the electric train (Utah Idaho Central Railroad) from Logan. This store-bought treat from the Blue Bird Restaurant in Logan, was to be both dessert and the highlight of the queen's court dinner, held shortly after the May Day program was completed at the yellow brick church. "The Utah Idaho Central, ran right down the center of our current Main Street at that time, there were dirt side streets on both sides of the tracks." Owen Sorensen related, and he was also chosen by Mozelle Barrett, to be her consort and thus had the honor of crowning his future bride, queen of the May. Several of the queens and their chosen consorts later went on to be married.
Karole and I went down to uncle Owens home and talked with aunt Mozelle and him about their time as Mendon May Queen and Consort. This was taken in the summer of 1996 while we were working on collecting the May Day information.
