This is a brief sample of the work that George W. Hill created in the hope that it would lead to a better understanding and communications with the local native Shoshone people. George dedicated a good portion of his life to this effort and felt a close, personal relationship with the Indians. He became very fluent in Shoshone, but could also communicate in three other native languages (Bannock, Ute and Nez Perce) as well. I understand his sign language was quite developed so he could 'speak' to or with other tribes if needed. George W. Hills brief introduction and a portion of his book on the vocabulary of the Shoshone language is as follows.
