An Early History of Cache County
I purchased my typescript copy of this Cache Valley history, compiled by M.R. Hovey from Sue Rakes and some other assorated papers by or from him at her bookstore on Main Street, then known as Books of Yesterday, in Logan, Utah about 1995. I typed out this compiled 141 page, history which includes sections on all of Cache Valley, from both Utah and Idaho into my computer, by early spring of 2000.
M.R. Hovey is the original compiler of this text. It was never published as a book, or pamphlet for the local schools as was once intended, instead being published in the pages of a local Logan, Utah newspaper, The Journal, begining in August of 1923 and continuing on into 1924. Subscribers were encouraged to clip and paste the articles into a book of their own making. This history was created and printed, in conjunction with and part of the big celebration that Cache Valley had planned for the Centeninal of Cache Valley, in July of 1924. The reason for the celebration was the one-hundred years since the valley was first discovered by the fur trappers in 1824.
Cache Valley Bank struck commemorative coins or tokens and produced pointer yard sticks for the big event. I am sure other businesses took advantage of the large crowds expected, to advertise as well. I have made the digital chapters here, to facilitate the easy movement of the various sections, and also formatted and or modified it as needed for digital display.
