Lemuel Rice Earl, Sr. ~ Veteran WW II

Lemuel Rice Earl, Sr.— "His chair sits empty, ‘neath that old maple tree, a fading echo where he used to be. Our Pappy is gone now, a void not filled, he's back with loved ones, their hearts to thrill." Dad has returned home and is no longer frail and in pain. Lemuel Rice Earl, Sr., 88 of River Heights, passed beyond on Monday, September 16th, 2002. He was born November 28th, 1913, in Parker, Idaho, the fifth of nine children born to Jedediah (Bud) L. Earl and Estella Rice Earl. Lem was raised in Parker until his family moved to Fielding, Utah. He graduated from Bear River High School and attended the Utah Agricultural College in Logan. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served in the Pacific Fleet spending time on Yangtze gunboats as a China fleet sailor. He married Nana L. Burroughs in Long Beach, California, on March 5th, 1938. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple on March 26th, 1959. Upon returning from the service they made their home in Fielding and worked in the family mercantile business. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dad was the first man in the state to re-enlist in the Navy. For a time, he remained in Salt Lake City as a recruiter and was then commissioned as an Ensign and sent to the Pacific theater where his ship participated in several island campaigns, including the invasions of Saipan and Okinawa. Dad loved the sea and would have stayed with the Navy, but his family was first in life. He returned to Fielding and the grocery trade in the family tradition. He remained in the Naval Reserve until his retirement in 1973 as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1948 they moved to Mendon where they made their home for thirty-seven years. He owned and operated Earl's Grocery and was beloved by all who came to know him. In 1985 they made their home in River Heights. Dad was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a man of quiet dignity and integrity, with no pretense, who loved his country, family, friends and the gospel. Many are they who look to Dad and cite the positive influence he had upon their lives. He served many years as a Mendon scoutmaster and raised up more than forty Eagle Scouts. He has been a Deacon's quorum advisor and High priest group leader and he served in other positions in the church. He and Mom completed two missions to North Carolina and Maine. The legacy he leaves is his family and friends. He never sought for riches, only to be in the service of others. He is survived by his wife, Nan, River Heights; daughter, Elyse Christensen, Hyrum; two sons, Dennis R. Earl (Diane), Pensacola, Florida, L.R. Earl (Yvonne), River Heights; brother, Emerson (Bernie), Perry, Utah; a sister, Noreen Turner, Chandler, Arizona; twelve grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Clinton, LeConte, Roland, Janice, Enid and Lulu. Funeral services will be held in the Providence Stake Center, 700 South 400 East River Heights, Thursday, September 19th, at noon. A viewing will be held at the Allen-Hall Mortuary 34 East Center, Logan from six to eight p.m. Wednesday, September 18th, and at 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Providence Stake Center before the funeral. Interment will take place in the Mendon Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary. ~The Herald Journal, September 18th, 2002.

Nana Burroughs Earl

Nana Burroughs Earl— On March 9th, Mom "slipped the surly bonds of earth" and dashed along the yondering path to meet her forever sweetheart. Dad would have commented that he was "awash in Stygian Darkness awaiting her arrival." Mom was born in 1920 to William Vernon and Anna Laura Weaver Burroughs. The fifth of six children, she grew up in Arkansas. She persevered through the difficulties of the depression years and of being shunted between relatives in Montana and California. It was in California where a swashbuckling sailor caught her eye and in 1938 married Lemuel Rice Earl. They were later sealed in the Logan L.D.S. Temple in 1959. In 1940 after the birth of Lemuel R.(L.R.), Jr., they moved to Fielding, Utah where they set up home in the Earl family mercantile business. Soon after Dennis Roland came along in 1941, Dad was off to the War in the Pacific, leaving Mom to care for their two boys and help in the store. In 1948, the family removed again to another store in Mendon, UT and settled in for the next 37 years. It was during this time in 1951 that Mom finally got her little girl, Nana Elyse. In 1985, she and Dad once again pulled up and moved with their son L.R. and daughter-in-law Yvonne to River Heights, Utah. A few years after Dad passed away in 2002, Mom decided to relocate to Hyrum, Utah to be with her daughter Elyse. Here she spent her twilight years under Elyse's tender care before moving on up the trail to meet Dad. She is survived by her children, L.R. (Yvonne) River Heights, Utah, Dennis (Diane) Hyrum, Utah and Elyse Christensen, Hyrum, Utah; twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and seven great, great grandchildren. Mom was a master seamstress, skilled in the kitchen and an avid genealogist, having researched thousands of names. We expect she is now connecting with many of those ancestors. Mom served in various church capacities, including Relief Society, Primary and Young Women. Mom and Dad served L.D.S. missions in North Carolina and Maine and officiated for many years in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. Her unselfish placement of others needs above her own brightened many lives in uncountable ways. We miss you already Mom. Funeral services will be on March 19th at twelve noon in Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan, Utah. A viewing will be held Sunday from six to eight p.m. at Nelson's and prior to service 10:30-11:30am. Interment will be in the Mendon Cemetery. ~Newspaper Not Listed. March 9th, 2018.
