Ada Andersen Bailey

Preston, Idaho— Ada Andersen Bailey, 88 died Wednesday, May 6th, 1998, at the Franklin County Nursing Home in Preston. She was born September 4th, 1909, in Mendon, Utah, the second child of John and DeSena Sorensen Andersen. She was raised in Arbon, Idaho, where she attended school. She married Charles Kerr Bailey on both of their birthdays, September 4th, 1928, in Pocatello, Idaho. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan L.D.S. Temple on May 31st, 1929. They lived in Arbon until 1940 when they moved to Clifton, Idaho. She was active in the community and civic affairs, teaching 4-H sewing club for twenty-seven years. She was the head of the Red Cross for one year and was active in cancer drives for many years. She was active in the Farm Bureau for twenty-nine years, serving as its president for one year and as a local chairman and county delegate. She attended the national convention in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1962. She was active in P.T.A. and served as president one year. Her husband was a school bus driver and she substituted for him, then she became the bus driver for a short time. She also cooked and was custodian for the school in Clifton. She reported the Clifton News for thirty-five years and then for the nursing home until her death for the Preston Citizen. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving as Relief Society visiting teacher from the time she was married until she had her stroke in August of 1997. She served in the Primary for thirty-nine years and also held positions in the Relief Society and Young Women's organizations. She was a member of the Harold B. Lee Camp of the Daughter's of Utah Pioneers. She enjoyed crocheting and genealogy. She loved to grow things and had a garden for years. She always had flowers in her windows and outside she loved to work in her flower garden. She loved to grow Christmas cactus; they were her joy. Her talents had a great influence on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will miss her loving guidance. She is survived by six children, Dorothy LaRae (Lester) Owen, Preston, Idaho, Ranae (Paul) Beckstead, Tacoma, Washington, Charles Eldon (Beverly) Bailey, Taylor, Utah, Ralph J. (Carol) Bailey, Taylorsville, Utah, Larry Reed (Patricia) Bailey, Phoenix, Arizona, Steven Glen (Janet) Bailey, Ogden, Utah, a daughter-in-law, Alida Bailey of New Hampshire; thirty-four grandchildren; eighty-six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Dennis LuWayne, a granddaughter, LaRae Owen, and by five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Funeral services will be at eleven a.m. Monday, May 11th, in the Clifton Second Ward chapel with Bishop Neil Fuller conducting. Charles Kerr Bailey

Clifton, Idaho— Charles Kerr Bailey, 73 died Monday at his home in Clifton, Idaho, of a heart ailment. He was born September 4th, 1897 in Wellsville, Utah, to James R. and Anna Kerr Bailey, and married Ada Andersen, September 4th, 1928 in Pocatello. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. Mr. Bailey was a farmer and a school bus driver. He is survived by his widow, five sons and two daughters, Mrs. Lester (Dorothy) Owen, Preston; Mrs. Paul (Ranae) Beckstead, Tacoma, Washington; C. Eldon, Taylor, Utah; Ralph J., Salt Lake City; Larry R., and Dennis L., both of Pocatello; Steven G., Layton, Utah; twenty-five grandchildren, brothers and sisters, Thomas K., Moses Lake, Washington; Mrs. E.R. (Mary) Renburg, and Mrs. Joe (Enda) Arbon, both of Pocatello; Mrs. Royal (Tressa) Sorensen, and Mrs. Soren (Meryl) Christensen, both of Malad City. Funeral services will be held Friday at one p.m. in the Oxford-Clifton L.D.S. Ward chapel. Clarence Samuel Barrett

Mendon Man Taken by Death, Mendon— Clarence Samuel Barrett, 68 of Mendon died in a Logan hospital early today following a long illness. He was born March 28th, 1889 in Mendon, a son of William and Elizabeth Wennergren Barrett. He was married March 3rd, 1926, to Martha Stuart in the Salt Lake Temple. Surviving are his widow, Mendon; three sons, William and Stanton, Mendon, and Charles of Vernal; three grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Schiffman Logan; Mrs. Alexander W. (Charlotte) Richards, Mendon; Mrs. Elmer J. (Selma) Hancock, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Harold (Algie) Brown, Salt Lake; a brother, Oscar J. Barrett, Mendon. Mr. Bartlett was a member of Mendon L.D.S. ward and a High Priest in Logan stake. He had been active in various church auxiliaries; by occupation he was a farmer. Clarence Samuel Barrett— Mr. Barrett, Mendon— Funeral services for Clarence Samuel Barrett, 68 lifelong Mendon Resident, will be conducted Saturday, one p.m. in Mendon Ward chapel with Bishop Rulen C. Elizabeth Stumpf Barrett

Mendon, Utah— Elizabeth Stumpf Barrett, 97 of Mendon, died Tuesday, June 4th, 1985 in Brigham City. She was born May 17th, 1888 in Mendon, the daughter of Traugott and Jane Buist Stumpf. She married Oscar J. Barrett on June 16th, 1909 in the Logan L.D.S. temple. He died June 7th, 1974. She lived all her life in Mendon. She enjoyed school and tried to excel in all that she did. She was active in the Mendon Dramatic Company and gave musical readings and recitations. She had been chorister for the Mendon L.D.S. choir and was relief society chorister for many years. She was also active in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and had been a correspondent of The Herald Journal. She is survived by seven children, Ivan J. Barrett, Orem; Mrs. Owen (Mozelle) Sorensen, Mendon; Mrs. Ray (Inez) Hill, Wellsville; Mrs. Roy (Theta) Thackeray, Etna; Mrs. Ned (Irene) Bodily, Mendon; Stanley M. Barrett, Hyde Park; thirty-one grandchildren; eighty great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Isabella. Funeral services will be at noon Friday in the Mendon L.D.S. Ward Chapel with Bishop Stanley T. Buxton conducting. Laura Matilda Barrett

Mendon Native Dies Sunday Eve, Mendon— Laura Matilda Barrett, 70 resident of Mendon for more that fifty years, died Sunday evening at the home of a sister, Mrs. A.W. Richards, in Mendon. She was born in Mendon September 9th, 1879, a daughter of William and Elizabeth Matilda Wennergren Barrett. She had lived in Mendon for fifty years and for the past twenty years had resided in Weiser, Idaho. She returned in Mendon about three months ago. She had been active in L.D.S. church work throughout her life. Survivors include two brothers and four sisters: Oscar J. Barrett, Clarence S. Barrett, and Mrs. Charlotte B. Richards, all of Mendon; Mrs. Selma H. Hancock, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Eveline Schiffman, Logan; Mrs. Algie Brown, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at one p.m. in the Mendon L.D.S. ward chapel by Reeves Bird, bishop. Friends may call at the home of a brother, Clarence S. Barrett, in Mendon. Martha Parker Stuart Barrett

Mendon, Utah— Martha Stuart Barrett, 83 of Mendon, died Friday, December 18th, 1981, at her home in Mendon. She was born August 11th, 1898, at Wellsville, the daughter of Charles and Eliza Parker Stuart. She married Clarence Samuel Barrett March 3rd, 1926, in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. He died February 19th, 1958. She was an active member of the Mendon Second Ward, having served as a teacher in the relief Society and Sunday school for many years. She was a Relief Society President for years and served an L.D.S. Eastern States Mission. Survivors include three sons: Clarence William Barrett and Stanton Stuart Barrett, both of Mendon; Charles Edward Barrett of Milo, Idaho. A sister, Sarah Ann (Sadie) Stuart Hardman of Mendon, nineteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. A sister and two brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at noon at the Mendon L.D.S. Ward with Bishop Stanley T. Buxton conducting. Friends may call at Hall Mortuary Sunday from seven to nine p.m. and Monday at the ward one hour prior to services. Michael Stephen Barrett

Michael Stephen Barrett— 24 of Logan, died September 30th, 1982, at the McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden. He was born October 9th, 1957, in Logan, a son of Stanton S. and Beryl Barwick Barrett. He married Jane Nelson, September 18th, 1981, in the Logan L.D.S. temple. He graduated from Sky View High School and L.D.S. Seminary in 1975. He served an L.D.S. Mission to Scotland from 1977–79. He has lived in California for the past year, returning to Cache Valley to attend Utah State University. Survivors include his wife, father and mother, of Mendon, two brothers and five sisters: Kevin Stanton Barrett, Salt Lake City; Jon Tyler Barrett, Mendon; Mrs. Ray (Carolyn) Olsen; Mary Jean Barrett, Marciea Barrett, Heather Barrett and Rose Marie Barrett, all of Mendon. He is also survived by grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James T. Barwick, Mendon. Funeral services will be held Monday at noon in the Mendon Ward chapel with Bishop Stan Buxton officiating. Friends may call at the Hall Mortuary Sunday from seven to nine p.m. and at the chapel one hour prior to services. Accident— Michael Stephen Barrett, 24 of 120 West 300 South, was listed in very critical condition Saturday afternoon at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden. He sustained multiple injuries following a traffic accident Friday evening in Young Ward. According to U.H.P. reports, Barrett was riding a motorcycle east on Mendon Road when he collided with an eastbound self-propelled hay wagon, driven by Stanley Jackson, 315 South 3200 West. Barrett then entered the west bound lane and collided with a vehicle driven by Patricia Bodrero, 1955 South 5900 West, Mendon. ~Newspaper Not Listed, September 24th 1982.


Oscar Junius Barrett

Mendon, Utah— Oscar Junius Barrett, 91 recognized as Mendon's oldest citizen died at his home in Mendon Friday. He was born in Mendon July 6th, 1883, a son of William and Elizabeth Wennergren Barrett. He attended school in Mendon and the Brigham Young College in Logan, and then filled a mission for the L.D.S. Church to Sweden. Mr. Barrett had been active in the church throughout his life having been a home teacher for seventy-five years and a stake missionary. He served in the ward Sunday school superintendency, in the M.I.A. and was an ardent temple worker. When the new chapel was under construction, he was a member of the building committee, and in charge of church missionaries affiliated with the project. He was Mendon town marshal for several years, and had served in other civic capacities. On June 16th, 1909, he married Elizabeth Ann Stumpf in Logan L.D.S. Temple. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this month. Surviving are seven sons and daughters: Professor Ivan J., Orem; Mrs. Owen (Mozelle) Sorensen, Mendon; Mrs. Ray (Inez) Hill, Wellsville; Mrs. Roy (Theta) Thackeray, Etna, California; Mrs. Kenneth (Geneva) Olsen, Orem; Mrs. Ned (Irene) Bodily, Mendon; Stanley M., Hyde Park; thirty-one grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Charlotte B. Richards, Mendon; Mrs. Selma Hancock and Mrs. Algie Brown, both of Salt Lake City. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at one p.m. in the Mendon Ward chapel with Dale Freeman, counselor in the bishopric conducting. Friends may call at Hall Mortuary in Logan this evening from seven to nine o'clock, and at the Relief Society room in the Mendon chapel Monday one hour prior to service. Stanton Stuart Barrett

Stanton Stuart Barrett— 64 of Mendon, Utah, died Monday, November 9th, 1998, in Salt Lake City, Utah. A complete obituary will follow in a later edition of The Herald Journal. Arrangements are by Allen-Hall Mortuary, Logan. ~The Herald Journal, November 10th, 1998, page 4.

West Valley, Utah— Stanton Stuart Barrett, 64 of Mendon, Utah, passed away November 9th, 1998, of complications related to a previous injury. Stanton was born March 1st, 1934, in Mendon, Utah, to Clarence Samuel Barrett and Martha Parker Stuart. He was sealed to Beryl Barwick on April 7th, 1954, in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. Stanton was called to serve on a mission with his young family in the church mission building program from 1963 to 1965, where he constructed a chapel for the saints in Hamilton, Scotland. Throughout his life, he enjoyed serving the Lord in various callings in his church, including Ward Clerk, Young Men's President, Bishop's counselor, Bishop, and High Councilman. Stanton was a master craftsman and building contractor by trade, constructing many homes, offices and churches. He truly enjoyed working. He is survived by his wife, Layton, Utah; and seven children, (Ray) and Carolyn, Mendon, Utah, Kevin and (Venna) Barrett, Boone, N.C., Jane Wade, West Jordon, Utah, (Curtis) and Mary Meats, Hyrum, Utah, (Boyd) and Marcia Casselman, Kaysville, Utah, (Darrell) and Heather Jensen, Young Ward, Utah, Rosemarie Barrett, Logan, Utah, and Jon Barrett, Layton, Utah; and twenty-seven grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Charles and Maurice Barrett, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and William and Sharlyn Barrett, Mendon, Utah. Also other extended family. He was proceeded in death by a son, Michael. We have great admiration for him. Stanton was loved, respected and well known by many. All who knew him will miss him very much. Stanton's greatest love was his family and the Savior. A viewing will be held from six to eight p.m. Thursday, November 12th, 1998, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan, Utah. Funeral services will be at noon, Friday, Novovember 13th, 1998, in the Mendon L.D.S. Chapel, 100 West Center, Mendon, with Bishop Gaylen Chandler conducting. Grant Henry Bartlett ~ Veteran WW II

Salt Lake City, Grant Henry Bartlett, 69 a unique, vibrant, highly intelligent and fun-loving individual full of warmth, humor, strength and integrity, passed to the next phase of his existence on June 20th, 1992, after a ten month battle with cancer. He accepted the challenge and fought valiantly, but this time the villain won. He was born June 18th, 1923, in Mendon, a son of Henry and Marvel Hancock Bartlett. He married Nancy Lee Hillman on August 20th, 1954. He was an elder in the L.D.S. church. He served in the U.S. Armed Forces with the 179th Infantry Regiment during World War II, in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater and during the Korean conflict. His valor and courage were recognized with numerous decoration and citations. He played trumpet and trombone with the Mendon Jazz dance band prior to and after his military service until moving to Salt Lake City, where he became foreman at Noyce Transfer Co. until his retirement in 1985. He is survived by his wife of Salt Lake City; his sister Mrs. Frank (Della) Hadley, Plain City, Utah; his brother Ross W. Bartlett and wife Betty of Mendon, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he cared for deeply and all of whom loved him dearly. His quick wit and sage advice will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. Funeral services will be held at noon, Wednesday, in the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Mendon Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post #7. Henry Bartlett ~ Veteran WW I

Death Claims Mayor of Mendon Town, Mendon— Henry Bartlett, 69 died early this morning at a Logan hospital following a short illness. He was born February 17th, 1896, in Swan Lake, Idaho, a son of William and Alice Hughes Bartlett. He married Marvel Hancock on April 7th, 1920. A member of the Mendon L.D.S. Ward, he had attended school in Mendon and Utah State University. Mr. Bartlett was a veteran of World War I and a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Before retirement he was a farmer and had been employed as a guard at the Utah General Depot for ten years. During World War II he served as a guard for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He had served on the Mendon City Council, was city Marshall and at the time of his death was serving as mayor of Mendon. Surviving are his widow, a son Ross A. Bartlett, both of Mendon; a daughter, Mrs. Frank (Dells) Hadley, Plain City; a son, Grant H. Bartlett, Salt Lake City; six grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Edgar (Nellie) Hancock, Mendon. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at twelve noon in the Logan L.D.S. Stake Center, First South and Fourth West, by Bishop Fred W. Sorensen of the Mendon Ward. Martha Alice Hughes Bartlett

Services Set for Mendon Woman— Funeral services will be held at the Mendon ward chapel Tuesday at two p.m. for Martha Alice Hughes Bartlett, 73 wife of William Bartlett. Interment will be in the Mendon cemetery under direction of the Lindquist mortuary. Mrs. Bartlett passed away Friday. She was born July 8th, 1864, at Mendon, a daughter of Henry W. and Martha Goatman Hughes. Besides her husband she is survived by three children, Mrs. Eva Smith, Mrs. Nellie Hancock and Henry Bartlett, all of Mendon, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two brothers, George G. Marvel Hancock Bartlett

Mendon, Utah—Marvel Hancock Bartlett, 83 of Mendon died Monday in the Valley View Nursing Home. She was born October 5th, 1894, in Mendon to James B. and Emma Sorensen Hancock. She married Henry Bartlett, April 7th, 1920, in Ogden. He died October 5th, 1965. Mrs. Bartlett received her education in Mendon. Active in the L.D.S. church, she was ward organist for many years, a teacher in the M.I.A. and Primary, and a member of the Relief Society. She played with the Mendon Jazz Orchestra, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a former member of Cache Valley Mayors Association Auxiliary. Also, she had been chairwoman of the Mendon Democratic Party, and a news reporter for the Cache American newspaper. Surviving are two sons and a daughter, Mrs. Frank (Della) Radley, Plain City; Grant H. Bartlett, Salt Lake City, and Ross W. Mendon; six grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday noon in the Mendon Ward chapel, with Bishop Stanton S. Barrett in charge. Friends may call at the Hall Mortuary Wednesday from seven to nine p.m., and at the ward chapel Thursday, one hour prior to services. Nancy Hillman Bartlett

Mendon, Utah— Nancy Hillman Bartlett, 64 passed away on March 25th, 1998, at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City from complications of a heart condition and a stroke. She was born March 17th, 1934, to Benjamin Hillman and Hazel Terry. She graduated from high school and attended Utah State University. She married Grant H. Bartlett on August 20th, 1954, in Logan, Utah. They lived in Logan for a few years before moving to Salt Lake City. She was a member of the L.D.S. church. She worked at Walker Bank and at Security Title for many years. She was very active and had a great interest in theater. She had a wonderful close, and supportive group of friends. She had a warm smile and a ready wit and was fun to be with. She thought well of others and respected others' views. Her husband, Grant, preceded her in death, dying in 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents and brother. She is survived by many nieces and nephews who love her dearly and remember her kindness. She is also survived by brothers and sister-in-law, aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, March 28th, in the Allen-Hall Mortuary in Logan, Utah. friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. before the services. Ross William Bartlett

Mendon, Utah— Ross William Bartlett, 68, died Sunday, January 12th, 1997, at the L.D.S. Hospital in Salt Lake City. He was born February 20th, 1928, in Mendon to Henry William and Marvel Mary Hancock Bartlett. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Maughan in the Logan L.D.S. Temple on March 3rd, 1947. Ross graduated from Sough Cache High School. He worked for Lundberg Motor Company for eight years. Then he worked for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph until retirement. He enjoyed farming and did so all his life. He was very active in the community. He was on the city council for five terms, and during that time he was instrumental in getting new water reservoirs and a new water system in Mendon. He was always interested in improving the community. He was active in the Mendon Wildlife Federation and had a real interest in these areas. He was active in the L.D.S. church. He had a beautiful tenor voice. He sang in many church functions when young and continued to sing solos and duets with his wife throughout his life. He held positions in the Mutual presidency. He was the Elders' Quorum president. He sang with the SPEBSGSA Barbershop Group, which he enjoyed very much. He is survived by his wife of Mendon; two daughters and spouses: Barry and Tawna Fonnesbeck, Mendon, and Ray and Debora Speth, Green River, Wyoming. He has seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and his sister. Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, January 15th, in the Mendon Chapel with Bishop Don Wilcox officiating. Friends may call from six to eight tonight at the Allen-Hall Mortuary and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mendon Chapel. Riverside, California— Emma Bowyer Barwick, age 90 died June 17th, 2001, at her home under hospice care. Funeral services will be at eleven a.m. on Saturday in the Mendon, Utah L.D.S. chapel. Emma Bowyer Barwick— Passed away at her daughter's home in Riverside, California, on Sunday, June 17th, 2001, at the age of 90. She was the daughter of Lizzie Millichamp and Samuel Copeland Bowyer. She was born in Oldham, Lancashire, England on February 16thh, 1911. Her education was in the English school system. At the age of fourteen, she went to work in a cotton mill and then later worked as a domestic. She married James Thomas Barwick on May 28th, 1932. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She is survived by her sons, Bernard Barick, of St. George, Utah and Kenneth James Barwick of Toquerville, Utah and her daughter, Beryl B. Barrett of Layton, Utah, Denice Cannell of Riverside, Calif., and Patricia B. Sumrall of Issaquah, Washington, twenty-nine grandchildren, seventy-three great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Barwick. Funeral services will be held at eleven. a.m. on Saturday, June, 23rd, 2001, at the Mendon, L.D.S. chapel. James Thomas Barwick

James Thomas Barwick— 84 died Sunday, October 17th, 1993 at the Logan Regional Hospital following a short illness. He was born April 16th, 1909, in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, son of William Joseph Barwick and Mary Ellen Stott. He was a member of the L.D.S. Church and at the time of his death he was a High Priest in the Mendon Second ward. He served faithfully in many church callings throughout his life. He emigrated from England to America with his family in 1948. He was a skilled cabinetmaker for many years, had a fish-and-chip business in England and worked at North American Aviation until his retirement. He married Lily Brown August 17th, 1929, in England. She died the following year. He married Emma Bowyer May 28th, 1932, in England. He is survived by his wife, Emma of Mendon, Utah; Two sons, Bernard (Linda) of St. George, Utah; Kenneth James (Donna) of Herriman, Utah; and three daughters, Mrs. Stanton (Beryl) Barrett of Mendon, Utah; Mrs. Richard (Denice) Cannell of Riverside, California; and Mrs. Stephen (Patricia) Sumrall of Bellevue, Washington. Also surviving are twenty-six grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren. He loved to travel, was an avid photographer and he loved his family very much. He will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at eleven a.m. Saturday, October 23rd in the Mendon Second Ward chapel with Bishop Jan Lindbloom conducting. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Elizabeth Rachel Rowe Bassett

Rachel Bassett of Preston Dies, Preston, Idaho— Mrs. Rachel Rowe Bassett, 82 died Friday morning at her home after an extended illness. She was born January 2nd, 1871, at Mendon, a daughter of Manning and Elizabeth Richards Rowe. She was married to Harlow F. Bassett December 12th, 1889, at Logan and the couple later received endowments at the Logan Temple. Mr. Bassett died in 1937. She had lived at Moore, Idaho, for seven years before moving to Weston where she resided for twelve years. She moved to Preston thirteen years ago. She had been an active member of the church, serving as officer and teacher in Relief Society. Surviving are seven sons and daughters: Mrs. Mae Tingey, Weston; Mrs. Wilma Nielsen, Blackfoot; Mrs. Fern Winner, Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Agnes Hanni, Idaho Falls; Preston R. Bassett and Raymond Bassett, Preston, and Kenneth Bassett, Cornish. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, one p.m., in Weston chapel by Bishop Parley Shaffer of Preston Second ward. Joseph Elmer Bassett

A Twelve Year Old Son— Of Mr. Harold Bassett of Mendon, was the victim of a terrible accident which occurred on Monday. The little fellow was riding on a load of coal, when with a sudden lurch of the wagon he was thrown to the ground directly in front of the wheels, both of which passed over him. His arm, between the elbow and shoulder, was fearfully crushed, and he also sustained a double fracture of the femur, or thigh bone, and serious internal injuries. He was brought to this city to be cared for and the very best attention was given the little fellow, but despite all efforts he succumbed, passing away at eight o'clock yesterday afternoon. ~The Journal, Logan City, Utah, Thursday, October 12th, 1899, page 8.


Lorin Raymond Bassett

Cornish, Utah— Lorin Raymond (Buck) Bassett, 73 died in Sunshine Terrace, Sunday of natural causes. He was born April 13th, 1899 in Mendon, a son of Harlow F. and Rachel Rowe Bassett. He married Hattie Rigby, March 29th, 1939 in Preston. They later were divorced. Surviving are a son and daughter, Blaine and Leora; three sisters and a brother, Mrs. Mae Tingey, Weston, Idaho; Mrs. Agnus Humphries, Idaho Falls; Mrs. Wilma Nielsen, Alpine, Wyoming, and Preston Bassett, Logan. Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday noon in Webb Mortuary under direction of Bishop Richard W. Hendricks. Friends may call at the mortuary from eleven a.m. Wednesday until time of service. Allan James Bodily

Millville, Utah— Allan James Bodily was born on August 27th, 1978, in Logan, to James J. Bodily and Connie Carlisle Bodily. He died February 6th, 2004, in his sleep. He was a special child who was diagnosed with Wolfram Syndrome when he was about thirteen years old. This is a genetic disorder that causes deafness, blindness, diabetes and diabetes inspidus. He was born deaf and attended the Utah School for the Deaf for seventeen years. He had wonderful teachers there who helped him grow, learn and become the wonderful young man that he was. He developed diabetes when he was four years old and amazingly learned to cope with all of the problems that come with that. He started losing his eyesight when he was eleven and eventually became blind. He had two great guide dog friends, Sydney now living in Denver, Colorado, and Kelli. Allan graduated from the Utah School for the Deaf and Logan High School in 1997. He was one of the speakers at the graduation ceremony for the Utah School for the Deaf. He also attended school at the Bridgerland Area Technology Center and a few classes at Utah State University. He was very optimistic about his life and influenced many people for the good with his attitude. He was a member of the Cache Valley Deaf Branch in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he was a home teacher. The members there were very good to him and many thanks are owed to them for their friendship and help. He also attended the Millville Second Ward which is where he earned his Eagle Scout award. He planted trees at the Millville Park for his Eagle project. They will stand as a reminder of him for many years to come. He loved to hike and fish and continued those activities even after he became blind. He loved playing baseball and participated in Little League until he lost his eyesight. He was also involved in the Cache Valley Soccer League. He loved to follow the Utah Jazz and that was one of the hardest things for Allan when he could no longer watch the Jazz play. Allan was able to travel the United States and attended many conventions with the deaf-blind. He learned to read braille very well and was an avid participant of the reading program with the Utah State Library for the Blind. He had many interveners who helped him in his daily activities and became his friends. Many thanks are also owed to the members of the Cache Valley community who have helped him and watched out for him. He was not afraid to try new and adventurous things and enjoyed life. Allan, you can now see the stars again. He is survived by his parents of Millville; his grandparents, Milton and Dawna Carlisle of Logan and Irene Bodily of Mendon; his sister, Janice of Shelley, Idaho; brothers, Mark (Shauni) and Ryan, both of Millville and Cameron, serving a mission in the New Hampshire, Manchester Mission; his good friend, Keri-Ann Ruemmler of Shawnee Hills, Kan.; and many uncles, aunts, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ned James Bodily; and his uncle, Lee Bodily. Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, February 9th, 2004, in the Providence South Stake Center, 360 E. 450 North, Millville. Friends may call from six to eight p.m. on Sunday at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center St., and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to services on Monday at the church. Lee Roy Bodily

Lee Roy Bodily of Mendon, Utah— Died Wednesday, June 10th, 1998, at the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born to Ned James Bodily and Irene Jane Barrett Bodily on March 18th, 1955, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was educated in the Cache County School District. He was active in government and community affairs. Lee served an L.D.S. mission to Anaheim, California, Mission. He was an active member of the L.D.S. church, serving in many positions, including executive secretary, second counselor in a branch presidency, scout master, Sunday school teacher, and Blazer leader. Lee attended Utah State University, where he was very active in student government and student productions. He was awarded the ASUSU Distinguished Service Award and ASUSU Innovation Award. He was also active in student productions where he helped many years with the Glen Miller Production and performed with the Sun Valley Caroler's for eleven years as Santa Claus. He graduated from the L.D.S. Institute of Religion and from Utah State University with a Bachelor's Degree in secondary education with Biology composite. He was a research assistant for the range department at U.S.U., doing research on the effects that grazing cattle had on the above-ground and below-ground growth of range grasses. Lee was a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America programs, working many summers at summer camps in different positions such as: merit badge counselor, commissioner, camp ranger, program director, and for two years a camp director of Aspen Ridge on the Hull Valley Reservation. He also helped run the winter camps at Camp Wapatee for many years. Lee married Nancy Norman on January 18th, 1984, in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. They have four sons; Micah James Bodily, Jacob Lee Bodily, Forrest Lee Bodily, and Dakota Matthew Bodily. Lee's professional career had a lot of rewarding diversity in it. He taught at Jefferson Middle School in the Preston, Idaho, school district. He worked for the Education Department at U.S.U. evaluating student teachers working on their teaching degrees in the sciences. An especially rewarding experience that he had was to work for Rivendell of Utah, which is a psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents with behavioral disorders. He was originally hired as a teacher/counselor to work with adolescent's on behavior modification and he became one of the head counselors over the children's unit, working with young children with behavioral problems. He taught science in the Logan, Utah, school district at both Logan High School and Mount Logan Middle School. Lee had the opportunity to go to Alaska and work with the Inupiat Eskimo people in Kotzebue, teaching at the middle school and high school. Kotzebue is thirty miles above the Arctic Circle and borders the Chukchi Sea. There he started a tanning and fur buying and selling business. Two years later he went and helped establish an alternative school in Takotna, Alaska, where he was the only high school teacher in the K-12 school. Besides teaching the regular curriculum, Lee started classes in taxidermy and trapping, with a variety of other programs like meat cutting and wrapping, writing grants for fish studies, doing studies on plant regrowth rates in burned areas, and students picking individual projects and working all year on these projects. He worked for the Klamath County School District at Bonanza, Oregon at the K-12 school, teaching a variety of science subjects. throughout his career, Lee started and ran many successful science fairs in different school districts. On becoming ill, Lee was teaching at A.C. Young Intermediate School in Brigham City, Utah, in which he taught sixth and seventh grade science. Lee was a lover of nature and all of god's creations. He enjoyed being with his family fishing, camping, hiking, and hunting. Lee is survived by his mother, Irene Jane Barrett Bodily, Mendon, Utah; his siblings, James J. (Connie) Bodily, Millville, Utah, Larry Ray (Donnette) Bodily, Wellsville, Utah, Mrs. Scott (Jolene) Cressall Clinton, Utah, and Mrs. Michael (LaNa) Maughan, Draper, Utah; his four sons and their mother Nancy, Paradise, Utah, Micah James Bodily, Jacob Lee Bodily, Forrest Lee Bodily, and Dakota Matthew Bodily. He is preceded in death by his father, Ned James Bodily. Funeral services will be held at the Mendon L.D.S. Chapel, 20 North 100 West, Mendon, Utah. Ned James Bodily ~ Veteran WW II

Mendon, Utah— Ned James Bodily, 52 died Saturday at a Logan hospital, following an extended illness. He was born December 23rd, 1925, to Joseph Austin and Rhoda Maria Page Bodily in Fairview, Idaho. On June 2nd, 1950, he married Irene Barrett, in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. He attended elementary school in Fairview, was the class valedictorian at Preston High School. He received his master's degree from Utah State University and did many hours of post graduate work. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Alpha Theta, Delta Phi and held offices in Phi Delta Kappa fraternity. He had won several journalism contests. During World War II he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a pharmacists mate 3rd class. An active member of the L.D.S. Church, he served as a missionary in the Western States Mission from 1946 to 1948. He was a High Priest in the Mendon Ward. He had served as teacher development leader, elders' quorum president, financial clerk, superintendent in the Sunday school, Sunday school teacher, and counselor in the Logan Stake Sunday school presidency. He had been active in the Boy Scouts of America, having served as an assistant scout master and on various committees. An educator, he had taught in the English department at Bountiful High School for two years, had been principal of the Mendon Elementary School for ten years. He taught at the University of Nebraska and worked on the Nebraska English curriculum. He served ten years as principal of North Park School. He was principal of the Smithfield Summit School when he took a medical retirement. He helped develop the tutorial program in the Cache School District, was a charter member and helped start the Cache-Rich School Credit Union and had served as an officer in that organization for many years. He served as an officer in the Cache Principals' Association, the State Principals' Association and served in the Cache Education Association. he held a seat on the Mendon City Recorder. He headed the Mendon City Bicentennial Committee and the July 24 committee. He played in the Cache Valley Baseball League, representing Fairview and Mendon. He started Little League Baseball in Mendon and served as a coach for eight years. He had also coached in the valley's commercial league. Surviving are his widow, three sons and two daughters, James J., Logan; Larry R., Lee R., Jolene and LaNa, all of Mendon; two grandchildren. Also surviving are his mother of Fairview, two brothers and five sisters, Earl Bodily, Clearfield; Mrs. Leon (Afton) Corbridge, Logan; Mrs. Alvaro (Venetta) Burbank and Mrs. Morris (Janece) Gregory, both of Mapleton; Mrs. Ned (Emma) McCracken, Garth Bodily and Mrs. Edison (Freda) Buckles, all of Ogden. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday noon in the Mendon Ward Chapel under the direction of Bishop Stanton S. Barrett. Friends may call at Cranney Mortuary Tuesday from seven to nine p.m. and again at the Mendon Ward Church one hour prior to services. Earl Moses Bodrero

Earl Moses Bodrero— 68 of 455 West 5000 North, died Friday at his home of natural causes. He was born November 4th, 1908, in Logan, to Moses and Wihelmina Bodrero, and married Mavis C. Deppe, June 26th, 1936, in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. Mr. Bodrero was active in the L.D.S. Church, and a member of Logan 26th Ward. He served a mission to the Western States in 1931, was secretary of the Elders Quorum, secretary of the Seventies, and one of seven presidents of Seventies in the 64th Quorum. Also, he was secretary of the High Priests in the 26th Ward, a home teacher and temple worker. During his lifetime, he operated a farm and worked as a carpenter in Logan. Surviving are his widow of Logan; one son and one daughter, Odell E., Mendon; Mrs. Carl (Sherlene) Fondnes, Brigham City; seven grandchildren; his mother of George, Washington; three brothers and four sisters, Mrs. Steele (Mae) Leatham, Ogden; Floyd R. Bodrero, Logan; Kenneth L., Dayton, Idaho; Mrs. Joel (Hazel) Ricks, Benson; Mrs. Laura Nungesser, Logan; Mrs. Monte (Barbara) Call, Malad City, Idaho, and Ivan Bodrero, George, Washington. Mavis Corbridge Deppe Bodrero

Mavis Corbridge Deppe Bodrero— Born June 26th, 1915, in Smithfield, passed away January 5th, 2005, in Providence. She joyfully reunited with her husband, Earl Moses Bodrero, who preceded her in death twenty-eight years ago. Her eighty-nine years were lived in happiness with an active mind and body until recently. Mavis grew up under the guidance of a loving mother and father, H. LaVina Corbridge and William Robinson Deppe. She lovingly played with a sister and brother, and with her sister enjoyed music and dancing lessons. Mavis attended school in Smithfield through junior high and graduated from North Cache High School in 1933, as well as from the L.D.S. Seminary. Late in life, she graduated with both three and four-year certificates from the Logan L.D.S. Institute. June 26th was significant to Mavis; besides being her birthday, she was also engaged and married on this date. Mavis and Earl built themselves a new home in Logan, using brick made in her father's Smithfield brickyard, moving in June 19th, 1940. They were blessed with two children, Odell and Sherlene, whom she doted on all through life. Her grandchildren meant the world to her and she delighted in teasing them. Mavis and Earl enjoyed keeping an immaculate home and yard. She helped with the farming, but her greatest joys were her children and home. Mavis filled her hours with reading, crocheting afghans, bike riding and walking until eighty years old. She found solace and fulfillment playing the piano and organ. Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; and by a sister and spouse, Bernice Deppe and Carl C. Clawson of Smithfield. Mavis is survived by her brother and spouse, Hazen and Beverly Deppe of Taylorsville, Utah; a son and spouse, Odell E. and Pat Bodrero of Mendon, Utah; and a daughter and spouse, Sherlene Joan and Howard L. Adams. Mavis was blessed with nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and eleven step-great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the Providence Assisted Living staff and Rocky Mountain Hospice for their loving care. Irene Marie Kennedy Boltinghouse

Mendon, Utah— Born March 16th, 1954. Passed away at Logan Regional Hospital from a recurrence of cancer on October 23rd, 2006 at the young age of 52. She was born to Jeanette and Maurice Kennedy at Mother Cabrini Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of two, Irene and family moved to Anaheim, California. Even in her early years, Irene showed a remarkable creativity and a talent for quickly learning new things. Just out of high school, Irene enrolled in the John Robert Powers School of Professional Modeling. Irene followed her dream as a professional model, until 1976 when she met the love of her life- her future husband Terry Lee Boltinghouse. They were married aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California on August 19th, 1978. Irene Marie followed Terry to West Germany where they lived for three years while Terry served in the United States Army. On June 3rd, 1979, they were blessed with the birth of their first child, Jissica Ruth at the military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany. After returning home, Irene and family moved to Yountville, California where they were blessed a second time by the birth of their daughter, Emily Suzanne on October 30th, 1982 at the Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, California. In 1984, Terry moved his family to La Quinta, California where they lived until moving to Mendon, Utah in 2002, During their thirty years of marriage, Irene became skilled in several different fields. Multi-talented, Irene has worked in art gallery, assisted an interior designer, inspected construction sites and various custom home installations. After moving to Mendon, Irene was able to pursue a life-long dream of having a large organic garden, a place on their own property for the horses, cats and the dog and hoped to someday raise alpacas. From early childhood, Irene was fascinated by watching women spin wool into yarn at Knott's Berry Farm in California. Once in Mendon, she finally had the opportunity to fulfill that dream when she purchased her own spinning wheel and took lessons on spinning and dying various fibers. She met with her friends in the park one day a week to spin and enjoy their company until she became too ill to continue. Irene loved life and all of its possibilities. Every day brought something new to learn or explore. Irene's loving, generous nature and strong but gentle spirit will be missed by all who knew her. Irene is survived by her husband Terry Lee Boltinghouse (55), daughters Jissica Ruth (27) and Emily Suzanne (23), her mother Jeanette Kennedy (86) and her sisters Joanna Marie Weir (60), Jeanette Maureen Reitman (59), Patricia Lee Clark (58) and Maureen Jean Kennedy (55). Homer Leslie Borgholthaus ~ Veteran WW I

Payette, Idaho— Services for Homer L. Borgholthaus, 77 of Payette who died Thursday at an Ontario hospital were held today. Services were conducted at the Payette Ward L.D.S. Chapel. Masonic rites will be by Masonic Lodge 28, A.F. & A.M. conducting. Interment will be Tuesday at the Mendon Cemeery. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 at the Mendon Ward Chapel where brief services will be held. He was born May 3rd, 1894 at Laramie, Wyoming. During his youth he lived in various parts of Wyoming, Idaho and Utah. He attended the L.D.S. business college in Salt Lake City and was employed by Union Pacific Railroad in 1910. He was a relief telegraph operator and served as a relief operator in various points in Utah and Idaho. During World War I he served as a telegraph operator in France and Germany. Following the war he returned to Cache Junction Utah as a depot agent. Me married Loretta Mary Walker at Ogden December 8th, 1922. He was depot agent at Lava Hot Spirngs and Burns, Oregon and moved to Payette in 1939. His wife died in 1941. He retired June 20th, 1960 after fifty years service on the railroad. He was over a fifty year member of the Harmony Lodge 21 A.F. & A.M. of Logan and a member of John Webster Rhoads American Legion 33 of Payette. He is survived by three sons, Don of Boise, Dr. Robert H. of Mountain Home, and Dr. Albion E. of Payette, a daughter Hellen Borgholthaus of San Francisco, and eleven grandchildren. ~The Herald Journal, July 26th, 1971, page 4.


Loretta Mary Walker Borgholthaus

Past Resident of Mendon Dies— Mrs. Loretta Walker Borgholthaus, 42 of Payette, Idaho, daughter of Mrs. Helen Walker of Mendon, died at Payette Wednesday. She was born in Mendon on May 2nd, 1899, a daughter of John R. and Helen Bigler Walker. She received her early education in Mendon schools, then attended the old Brigham Young College in Logan, where she was a vocal student of Professor Durham. She also graduated from the Budge Memorial Hospital nurse training school. Surviving are her husband, Homer Borgholthaus of Payette; four children, Don, Helen, Albien and Robert Borgholthaus, all of Payette; her mother, Mrs. Helen Walker of Mendon, and four brothers, George A. Walker of Carlin, Nevada; Gerald C. Walker of El Segundo, California; Mayor Vance D. Walker and Jesse Walker, both of Mendon. Funeral services will be held Sunday at two p.m. in the Mendon ward chapel with bishop Edgar S. Hancock taking charge. The body will arrive in Mendon Sunday morning and will be at the home of Mrs. Helen Walker, where friends may call prior to the services. Ex-Mendon Woman Dies— Mable Gardner Bowen, 79 passed away in Torrence, California Tuesday. She was born July 26th, 1886, in Mendon , a daughter of Alfred and Mary Coon Gardner. She was the wife of Herbert Bowen whom she married on October 23rd, 1915 in Mendon. The marriage was solemnized in the Logan L.D.S. Temple on April 12th, 1916. Mrs. Bowen was an active member of the L.D.S. church. The family made their home in Ogden and had lived in California since 1936. Surviving are her husband and two children, Jack, Fresno, California and Mrs. Ruth Thornton, Phoenix, Arizona; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brothers F.A. Gardner, Salt Lake City, and Hugh R. Gardner, Colusa, California; sisters, Mrs. Orson (Maud) Hancock, Malad City; Mrs. Chauncey (Mae) Paine, Pocatello; Mrs. Chauncey (Josephine) Sorensen, Ogden. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at eleven a.m. at the Kenneth Lindquist Mortuary by Bishop Fred W. Sorensen, Mendon. Friends may call prior to services on Saturday. Hubert Bowen

Hubert Bowen— 85 of 866 22nd, rear, died Sunday, October 29th, 1978, at his home. Mr. Bowen was born December 4th, 1892, in Beaver Dam, Box Elder County, Utah, a son of Charles M. and Florence Thorpe Bowen. He was married to Mable Garner on April 12th, 1916, in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. She died in 1965. He was married to Rozella Cheney Ellis on August 1st, 1966, in the Logan Temple. He resided in Ogden the past twelve years and formerly lived in Torrance, California, for twenty years. He was a self-employed bond salesman. He had been active in archeology. He was a member of the Ogden L.D.S. Stake High Priest Quorum and the 31st ward. He was an active genealogy worker. Surviving are his widow of Ogden; one son and one daughter, Jack G. Bowen and Mrs. Ruth Thornton, both of Fresno, California; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Stella Lowley, Billings, Montana; Mrs. Irene Schneider, Covina, California. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at eleven a.m. in the Larkin Chapel of the Dawn with Bishop Brent Stephens of the Thirty-first Ward officiating. Rollo Byron Brimm ~ Veteran WW I

Rollo Byron Brimm— 65 of 1754 Lake, died Saturday at the Dee Hospital following a prolonged illness. He was born August 15th, 1897 in Havelock, Iowa, a son of William H. and Eda Frazee Brimm. On December 23rd, 1947, he married Hilda Andersen in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mr. Brimm had lived in Lovelock, Stirling, Colorado, Olivia, Minnesota and a short time in Hawaii before coming to Ogden in 1943. He had been employed at Hill Air Force Base and the Utah Army Depot and since his retirement had been a stockman. He was a member of the Bird Island Lodge No. 44, F. & A.M. of Olivia, Minnesota and a member of the Ogden Shrine and El Kalah Temple. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the Purebred Angus Breeders Association. Surviving are his widow of Ogden and one sister, Mrs. Ed (Ruth) Honzay of Olivia, Minnesota. Public Masonic services will be conducted Tuesday at eleven a.m. at Lindquist & Sons Colonial Funeral Chapel. Martha Clementine Allen Brookins

Mendon, Utah— Impressive services were held Saturday in the ward chapel for Mrs. Martha Brookins, who passed away after a lingering illness. Counselor Edgar S. Hancock was in charge. The choir with William I. Sorensen as soloist sang, "I Have Read of a Beautiful City," under direction of Joseph C. Sorensen and organist, Mrs. Ellen Ladle. The invocation was offered by Vance D. Walker. A male quartet, from Providence, under direction of A.M. Mathews, sang, "We Are Wandering Down." Professor Alma N. Sorensen of the U.S.A.C. spoke of the great sufferings of Mrs. Brookins and read passages from the book of Job. John Welch said "Earth has no sufferings that Heaven cannot heal" and told of the faith of Mrs. Brookins in the gospel. Mormon D. Bird, President John Israelson of Hyrum and Edgar S. Hancock spoke of the good character of Mrs. Brookins. Special musical numbers were vocal solo, "I'm a Pilgrim" by Kay Sorensen, accompanied on the piano by Miss Mozelle Barrett. Duet John O. Hughes and Miss Gladys Hughes, "Jesus Lover of My Soul." The choir sang the closing song, "We Shall Meet." The benediction was pronounced by Henry C. Stauffer. The floral offerings were beautiful and profuse and were in charge of the Y.L.A. counselor, Ethel Taylor and Mrs. Opal Larsen. The pallbearers were Theo Whitney, Kay Sorensen, Owen Sorensen, Fred Sorensen, Orylin Whitney and Charles Buist of Wellsville. The grave was dedicated by Henry Hughes. ~Newspaper Not Listed, 1934.

Dies At Mendon— Mendon, Utah January 18th, Minor Brookins died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry C. Sorensen, here on Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mendon, Utah— The funeral services of Minor Brookins were held Monday in the ward chapel. The choir under the direction of Mrs. Oscar J. Barrett with Mrs. Charles Ladle at the organ, sang, "Truth Reflects Upon Our Senses," "I Need The Every Hour" and solo and choir, "I Have Read of a Beautiful City," sung by William I. Sorensen. Prayers were by Joseph T. Wood and Jeremiah Baker. Speakers were Mormon D. Bird, Joseph C. Sorensen, Professor Alma N. Sorensen of the U.S.A.C. and Counselor Edgar S. Hancock. All spoke of the honesty and sterling qualities of the deceased. Special musical numbers included violin solo, Alonzo Wood, accompanist, Mrs. Marvel Bartlett; vocal solo, John O. Hughes, Mrs. Charles Ladle accompanist. Counselor Edgar S. Hancock was in charge of the services. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. Pall bearers were: Joseph C. Sorensen, Nephi Sorensen, William I. Sorensen, George Hiibner, Joseph N. Sorensen, Charles Buist, Wellsville. The grave was dedicated by William I. Sorensen. Mrs. Alex Buist and son Charles of Wellsville, Professor A.N. Sorensen of Logan, attended the funeral. Minor Brookins was born March 20th, 1850 in Illinois where he spent his boyhood. When a young man he came to Richill, Missouri, where he worked as a miner. He later married Martha Allen. Mr. Brookins came to Mendon seven years ago to visit his daughter, Mrs. Henry C. Sorensen. He was a lover of nature, and the beautiful mountains and clear sparkling water the ideal climate, influenced him in making his home here. Mr. Brookins was honest, industrious and always looked on the bright side of life. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Nelson Brookins and leaves a wife and one daughter, Mrs. Henry C. Kathleen Mendenhall Brown

Mendon, Utah— Kathleen Mendenhall Brown, 32 died Friday at a Salt Lake City hospital. Mrs. Brown, a resident of Mendon the past three years, was born June 29th, 1941, in Spanish Fork. Her parents are Arthur L. and Delpha Cahoon Mendenhall of Salt Lake City. She was married in 1962 in Salt Lake City to Richard F. Brown. Mrs. Brown was active in church activities all her life and was a member of the Mendon Ward. Survivors include her husband and their two children, Joann and Richard E. Brown, Mendon; parents; two brothers, Dwain and Stanley Mendenhall, both of Salt Lake City; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Picker, Salt Lake City and Mrs. Marilyn Fernilius, Missoula, Montana. Funeral services are Tuesday at twelve noon in the Mendon L.D.S. Chapel with Stanton S. Barrett officiating. Ronald Albert Brush ~ Veteran

Ronald Albert Brush— 73 passed away on Wednesday, September 20th, 2006, in Logan, Utah, after a long illness. He was born November 27th, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois to Edgar and Elly Larsen Brush. Married Marylyn Wheeler, February 6th, 1955, in Park Forest, Illinois and were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1959. He attended High School in Harvey Illinois, and earned an NROTC scholarship to the University of Illinois in 1950 where he studied aeronautical engineering. He graduated on February 6th, 1955, and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. That afternoon he married his eternal companion Marylyn. After leaving active duty, he went to work for Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach California, as a production and test pilot, which gave him the opportunity to travel to many places all over the world. The family settled in Anaheim, California where they lived for thirty-six years. He retired in 1991 after working at Douglas for thirty-three years. After retiring, they moved to Mendon, Utah. He was an active faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served a mission with Marylyn, from October 2004 to April 2006, in the Family and Church History mission in Salt Lake City Utah. Survived by his loving wife, Marylyn Wheeler Brush, daughters, Karen (Kent) Barrett, of Winona, Kansas, Kim (Doug) Cooper, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Kristin (Mark) Thacker, Schaumburg, Illinois, and Koleen (Richard) Barrett, Colby, Kansas. Sons, Keith Brush, of Huntington Beach, California, Kirk (SueAnn) Brush, of Springville, Utah and Korry (Kristin) Brush of Layton, Utah. Brothers Robert (Diane) Brush, and Richard (Maria) Brush, and Sister Joyce (Bill) VeZain. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father Edgar Brush, mother Elly Larsen Brush and his step-mother Mae O'Reilly Brush. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 25th, 2006, twelve noon at the Mendon First Ward building, 20 North 100 West, Mendon, Utah. Agnes Burnett Buist

Aged Mendon Matron Taken, Mendon, Utah— Mrs. Agnes Bennett Buist, 81 died at her home here Wednesday night of ailments incident to old age. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the Mendon Chapel with interment in the Mendon Cemetery. Mrs. Buist was born in Montrose, Scotland, September 2nd, 1848, the daughter of F. Alexander and M. Elizabeth Robb Burnett. She spent her girlhood days in Scotland, marrying David Buist there in 1871. The family came to Salt Lake City in June, 1884 and to Mendon two months later where she has since resided. Mrs. Buist was a prominent church worker for many years, being the principal Relief Society teacher for a long period. Mr. Buist died about thirty-five years ago and three sons have also preceded Mrs. Buist to the grave. She is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Jane Stumpf, David Buist, Mrs. Lizzie Baker, and Henry and William Buist of Mendon, Alexander Buist of Wellsville; John Buist, Cache Junction. twenty-six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive. Services for Mrs. Agnes Buist Appropriate, Mendon— Funeral services for Mrs. Agnes Buist were held Sunday afternoon in the ward chapel with Bishop Henry C. Sorensen in charge. The choir, under the direction of Joseph C. Sorensen sang the opening and closing numbers with Mrs. Ellen Ladle at the organ. She also played appropriate music as a prelude and postlude; prayers were by John A. Gardner of Ogden and Bishop Warren Sweeten of Holbrook, Idaho, former residents of Mendon. Those who spoke words of consolation and paid tribute to the life work, the true friendship and the religious testimony of Mrs. Buist were John C. Brenchley of Wellsville a member of Hyrum stake presidency, Bishop Joseph Watkins, Jr., of Logan and Eddis Watkins of Brigham, who lived neighbors to Mrs. Buist for several years; Joseph N. Sorensen and Bishop Henry C. Sorensen, Mr. Brenchley and Eddis Watkins also read poems which were very appropriate, "That Angel Mother of Mine," and "My Mother." Musical numbers, all of which lent a sympathetic spirit of love and kindly feeling to all that the various speakers said, were: vocal duet, Joseph C. Sorensen and Mrs. Melvin Muir, with Mrs. Olive Hughes at the piano; instrumental duet George G. Sweeten of Garland and Alonzo Wood, with Miss Orpha Sweeten as accompanist; vocal duet, Mrs. Mattie Darley and Vernon Maughan, with Miss Erma Maughan at the piano, all from Wellsville. The floral offerings were indeed beautiful and profuse and were carried by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pall bearers were Earl Buist, John O. Hughes, Charles Buist, Harry Bartlett, Mahonri Richards and Gwen Smith. The grave was dedicated by Bishop Henry C. Sorensen. Mrs. Buist was born in Montrose, Scotland, September 2nd 1848. She was the widow of David Buist, who died about thirty-five years ago. Three sons have also proceeded Mrs. Buist to the grave. She is survived by the following sons and daughters, Mrs. Janet Stumpf, David Buist, Mrs. Lizzie Baker and Henry and William Buist of Mendon, Alexander Buist of Wellsville and John Buist of Wellsville and John Buist of Cache Junction. Alexander Burnett Buist

Rites Are Tuesday— Funeral services for Alexander Burdett Buist, 65 who died at his home in Mendon late Saturday night of a heart attack, will be held Tuesday at one p.m. in the Mendon ward chapel, with Bishop Edgar S. Hancock in charge. Friends may call at the family home in Mendon this evening and Tuesday until time of rites. Burial in the Mendon cemetery will be under the direction of the Thompson Funeral Home of Hyrum. Mr. Buist was born March 14th, 1877, in Arbroth, Scotland, a son of David Elder and Agnes Burdett Buist. He came to the United States with his parents in 1884. They lived in Salt Lake City about one year, then moved to Mendon. He married Bertha Sorensen on February 1st, 1906, in the Logan L.D.S. temple. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Wellsville, where they resided until last year. He was a maintenance employee of the Union Pacific railroad forty-three years, retiring last June. Surviving are his widow of Mendon and four sons and daughters, Mrs. Leona Rice of Tremonton, Mrs. Mary Dunn of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Ester Kerr of Wellsville and Charles A. Alexander Burdett Buist Eulogized at Bier— Funeral services for Alexander B. Buist of Mendon were conducted Tuesday in the Mendon ward chapel with Bishop Edgar S. Hancock officiating. Prayer were offered by President John C. Brenchley and President Colton Sweeten. Music was furnished by the ward Singing Mothers with special musical numbers presented by Nellie Leishman and Parley Hall, Mattie Darley and Archie Maughan of Wellsville and Mozelle Sorensen of Mendon. Speakers who praised the life and devotion of Mr. Buist and of his honest dealings with his fellow men, were John A. Gardner of Ogden; Dr. W.O. Christensen, Wellsville; Bishop John J. Hendry, Wellsville; and Professor Alma N. Sorensen, Logan. Closing remarks were given by Bishop Hancock. Annie Agnes Buist

Annie Agnes Buist— 87 of Mendon, died Sunday, October 15th, 1989, at the Sunshine Terrace in Logan. She was born September 24th, 1902, in Border, Idaho, the daughter of David Elder Buist and Hannah Maria Baker. After she was four years old, the family moved to Hyrum and later to Preston. When she was six years old, they moved to Mendon. She attended school at Mendon, South Cache, Brigham Young College and Utah State University. Before retirement she was an elementary school teacher for thirty-five years. Annie taught school in Wellsville, Hyrum, Lewiston, Richmond, Petersboro and Mendon. She was a member of the L.D.S. Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and ward librarian. Since July 5th, 1953, she had been a secretary and treasurer of the Simon Baker Family Organization. She enjoyed reading, gardening and traveling. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Melba and Fred Taylor, Mendon; a sister-in-law, Donna Buist, Mendon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be Thursday at noon in the Mendon First Ward Chapel with Bishop Larry J. Olsen conducting. Friends may call at Allen-Hall Mortuary, Wednesday evening from six to eight p.m., and at the church one hour prior to services. Bertha Sorensen Buist

Death Claims Bertha S. Buist, Mendon— Mrs. Bertha Sorensen Buist, 82 one of Mendon's pioneer residents, died early today at the home of a daughter in Salt Lake City. She was born December 7th, 1876 in Mendon, a daughter of Isaac and Mary Jacobsen Sorensen. She was married to Alexander Buist February 1st, 1906 in the Logan L.D.S. temple. Mr. Buist died in December 1942. Surviving are three daughters and one son: Mrs. Rawl (Leona) Rice, Amalga; Charles A., Logan; Mrs. Clive (Mary) Johnson, Salt Lake City and Mrs. Lewis (Ester) Kerr, Wellsville; ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two brothers, Joseph C. and Henry C. Sorensen, both of Mendon; two sisters, Mrs. Eulalia Welch and Mrs. Olive Hughes, both of Logan. At the time of her death, Mrs. Buist was a member of Mendon L.D.S. Ward, where she had lived since 1942. Prior to that time, she had resided in Wellsville for thirty years. In her younger life she had been M.I.A. secretary, Sunday school teacher, and a member of the ward choir. She had served in the Primary presidency, was active as a block teacher in the Relief Society, and as a member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers. David Elder Buist, Jr.

Esteemed Mendon Resident is Taken— Funeral services for David Elder Buist, 70 resident of Mendon for the past fifty-six years, will be conducted Wednesday at one p.m. in the Mendon ward chapel with Bishop Edgar S. Hancock in charge. Friends may call at the Buist home in Mendon Tuesday and Wednesday until time of rites. Interment in Mendon cemetery will be under the direction of the W. Loyal Hall mortuary of Logan. Mr. Buist passed away Sunday morning of a heart attack. He was born February 23rd, 1872, in Arbth, Scotland, a son of David and Agnes Burdett Buist. He came to the United States with his family at the age of thirteen as a convert to the L.D.S. church. After living in Salt Lake City for one year, the family moved to Mendon to make their home. For many years Mr. Buist was a section foreman for the Union Pacific railroad and later engaged in farming. He married Hannah Baker June 5th, 1900 in Mendon. Surviving are his widow, of Mendon; five sons and daughters, Annie, Earl A., Fern and Melba Buist of Mendon, and Sergeant David G. Buist stationed with the U.S. Army in Australia, and two brothers, Alexander Buist of Mendon and John Buist of Malad City, Idaho. ~Newspaper Not Listed, 1942.

David Elder Buist Eulogized In Mendon— Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Mendon Ward Chapel for David Elder Buist. Bishop Edgar S. Hancock presided. Prayers were offered by Patriarch Mormon D. Bird and Charles Ladle. the Singing Mothers directed by Mrs. Oscar J. Barrett, with Mrs. Ellen Ladle at the organ, sang the opening number. A duet was rendered by Mrs. Henry C. Stauffer and Cyril Nelson accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Harry Bartlett. Vocal solo John O. Hughes, accompanist, Mrs. Mozelle Sorensen who also played a piano solo, "O My Father." Those who paid high tribute to the fine character of Mr. Buist and praised him for his honesty, loyalty and courage were Oliver Taylor, Allen Willie, Joseph C. Sorensen, Mayor Vance D. Walker and Bishop Hancock. The grave in the cemetery was dedicated by Charles W. Ladle. ~Newspaper Not Listed, 1942.


David Glenn Buist ~ WW II

Mendon, Utah— David Glenn Buist, 66 of 320 North 200 West, Mendon, died December 4th, 1983, at his home. He was born May 24th, 1917, in Mendon, a son of David Elder and Hannah Maria Baker Buist. He married Donna Lanora Larsen July 29th, 1946, in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. He attended Utah State University, was a veteran of World War II, where he served in Australia, and was a member of the American Legion. He was a farmer and a retired carpenter from the Defense Depot in Ogden. Active in the L.D.S. Church, he fulfilled a stake mission in the Logan Stake and served in many other positions, including scoutmaster, explorer leader, M-Men teacher, dance director, drama director, stake M-Men supervisor, home teacher, clerk, teacher and secretary of the seventies quorum, ward chorister and high priest group leader. He enjoyed singing and sports and played basketball for many years with the Mendon Eagles. Surviving are his wife of Mendon, four sons, Michael Glenn Buist, Tremonton; Kenneth L. Buist, Tony Dean Buist, and Edwin David Buist, all of Mendon; eleven grandchildren, and two sisters, Annie Agnes Buist and Melba Buist Taylor, both of Mendon. A daughter, LaFawn, brother and sister preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Thursday at noon in the Mendon Ward chapel, with Bishop Paul R. Willie, Mendon First Ward, conducting. Friends may call at Hall Mortuary Wednesday from seven to nine p.m. and at the chapel Thursday one hour prior to services. Mendon, Utah— Donna Larsen Buist, 66 a loving and compassionate wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend, died August 18th, 1994, at the Salt Lake L.D.S. Hospital of postoperative complications. She was born February 10th, 1928, in Mendon, Utah, the daughter of Theo and Opal Larsen. She married David Glen Buist on July 29th, 1946, in the Logan L.D.S. temple. She was a dedicated member of the L.D.S. Church, serving as dance director, Mutual president, as a teacher in Primary, Sunday school, Relief Society, and Young Women's, as well as being a visiting teacher. She enjoyed singing in the ward choir with her husband for many years. She was a member of the Daughter of the Utah Pioneers. Among her many accomplishments, she attended and completed many Institute courses. She enjoyed serving in the temple and hospital. Most of all she enjoyed her children and grandchildren. She is survived by four sons and their spouses: Michael and Betty Ann of Tremonton; Kenneth and Pamela of Mendon; Tony and Helen of Hurricane; and Edwin and Diane, also of Mendon. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one sister, Clara and Lee Maughan of Wellsville, and a brother, Dean and DeAnn Larsen of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her daughter, LaFawn; her husband, David Glen Buist, and her parents, Theo and Opal Larsen. Funeral services will be held at noon Monday, August 22nd, 1994, in the Mendon First Ward chapel, 20 North 100 West, Mendon, with Bishop Larry J. Olsen conducting. Friends may call form six to eight p.m. Sunday at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan, and from 10:30–11:30 a.m. Monday at the ward prior to the services. Earl Amenzo Buist

Earl Amenzo Buist of Mendon Dies— Earl A. Buist, 63 died early this morning at his home following a long illness. He was born December 28th, 1904, in Border, Bear Lake County, Idaho, to David Elder and Hannah Maria Buist. He attended school in Mendon and graduated from South Cache High School He fulfilled a mission for the L.D.S. Church from November 1935 to January 1938 in the North Central States. For nine months of that time he was district president. After his return he was superintendent of the Mendon Ward Y.M.M.I.A. for five years and superintendent of the Mendon Sunday school for eight years. He served his community as a city councilman and justice of the peace. He took part in many dramas and dances and sang on numerous programs and at many funerals. He married Hazel Sorensen, daughter of Joseph C. and Alice Ladle Sorensen on January 28th, 1942 in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. Surviving are his widow and four children, a daughter Glenna Buist Markey and three sons, David Lynn, Vaughn Earl and Vern Evan Buist, all of Mendon. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters, Annie, Fern and Glenn Buist, and Mrs. Fred (Melba) Taylor, all of Mendon. Funeral services will be held Saturday at one p.m. in the Mendon Ward Chapel under the direction of Bishop Zeno Andersen. Friends may call at Hall Mortuary Friday from seven to nine p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to services at Mendon Ward Chapel. Hannah Maria Baker Buist

Pioneer of Mendon Dies, Mendon— Mrs. Hannah B. Buist, 80 widow of David E. Buist, died at the family home in Mendon Saturday night of infirmities incident to age. She was born in Mendon October 23rd, 1876, a daughter of Amenzo White Baker and Agnes Steele Baker. Her parents were pioneers of Utah and Cache Valley; her father came to Utah in 1847 with the first parties of Latter-day Saint families, and then went to Mendon in 1860 as a pioneer of that community. Mrs. Buist had been active in Relief Society as a block teacher and chairman of the beautification committee, and was past president of the Mendon Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Her efforts had been devoted throughout her life to religious and civic pursuits of the community. She was married to David E. Buist June 5th, 1910 in Mendon; he died December 6th, 1942. Surviving are five children, all of Mendon; Annie Buist; Fern Buist, who is principal of the Ellis school in Logan; Earl and Glenn Buist, and Mrs. Fred (Melba) Taylor; eleven grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Annie Johnson, Provo. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, one p.m., in Mendon ward chapel by Bishop Rulen C. Ladle. Friends may call at the Buist home in Mendon Tuesday, seven to nine p.m., and Wednesday from ten a.m. until time of services. Mrs. Buist's Service is Held— Funeral services for Mrs. Hannah Baker Buist were held Wednesday in the Mendon Ward chapel with Bishop Rulen C. Ladle conducting. Mrs. Buist was a lover of flowers and the profuse floral offerings made a beautiful background. John D. Baker gave the prayer at the home. Mrs. Ellen Ladle played the prelude and postlude. Mrs. Nellie Leishman and Parley Hall of Wellsville sang "Rock of Ages" and "Whispering Hope" with piano accompaniment by Mrs. Mozelle Sorensen. W. Charles Ladle gave the invocation. Bishop Ladle read a short sketch of Mrs. Buist's life. Henry Bytheway of Salt Lake City spoke highly of Mrs. Buist's wonderful character and paid tribute to the Baker family. Mrs. Lois Buist and Mrs. Della Ferguson of Logan sang "O, My Father," a favorite of Aunt Hannah. Ivan Baker read some of the poems composed by his aunt and spoke of her kind, loving nature. Kay Sorensen sang "Beyond the Sunset" accompanied by Mrs. Mozelle Sorensen. Oscar J. Barrett pronounced the benediction. The grave in the Mendon cemetery was dedicated by Howard Baker. Pallbearers were Chester Kidman, Alfred Yonk, Melvin Johnson, Joseph Porter, John O. Hughes and Asa Baker. The flowers were carried by grandchildren and the Relief Society. ~Newspaper Not Listed.


Hazel Sorensen Buist

Mendon, Utah— Hazel Sorensen Buist, 67 Mendon, died November 8th, 1983, at Logan Regional Hospital. She was born July 14th, 1916, in Mendon, a daughter of Joseph C. and Alice Ladle Sorensen. She married Earl A. Buist January 28th, 1942, in the Logan Latter-day Saint temple. He died December 27th, 1967. She was an active member of the Latter-day Saint church, having served in Primary, M.I.A., ward choir, Sunday School and Relief Society. She was active in P.T.A., and was a 4-H leader. She worked for the Selective Service Commission during World War II. She worked for Logan Hospital, Everton Publishers and was deputy treasurer for Cache County. Her interests were cooking, sewing and gardening. Surviving are one daughter and three sons, Mrs. Glenna Markey and David L. Buist, both of Mendon; Vaughan E. Buist and Vern Buist, both of Logan; five grandchildren; three brothers and one sister, Dr. Edgar L. Sorensen, Manhattan, Kansas; Owen Sorensen, Eldon Sorensen and Veda Sorensen, all of Mendon. Funeral services will be held Saturday at two p.m. in the Mendon Ward chapel with Dennis Kidman conducting. Friends may call at Hall Mortuary Friday from seven to nine p.m. and at the ward Saturday, one hour prior to services. Henry Burnett Buist

Henry Burnett Buist— Stroke Fatal to Mendon Resident, Mendon — Henry Buist, 56, died Sunday at his home in Mendon. Mr. Buist suffered a stroke last Monday and failed to rally. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at one p.m. in the Mendon ward chapel with interment in the Mendon cemetery. Mr. Buist was born May 26th, 1875, at Arbroath, Scotland the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Buist. His parents are both dead, Mrs. Buist having died in Mendon two years ago. The family came to Utah in 1883, living in Salt Lake City for a few months before coming to Mendon where they had since resided. Mr. Buist, after spending his boyhood in Mendon, started to work on the railroad, retiring a few years ago and again settling in Mendon. Surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Jane Stumpf, David Buist, Mrs. Lizzie Baker, William Buist Mendon; Alec Buist, Wellsville; John Buist, Malad City, Idaho. ~Newspaper Not Listed, 1932.

Rites Draw Large Attendance, Mendon, Utah— A sweet spirit pervaded the funeral services of Henry Buist, Wednesday in the ward chapel. A large assembly of friends, neighbors and relatives came to pay respect to his memory. The services were in charge of Bishop Henry C. Sorensen. Prayers were by Edgar S. Hancock and Henry Stauffer, Jr. Musical numbers were furnished by the ward choir, under the direction on Joseph C. Sorensen and Mrs. Charles Ladle, organist. Special numbers were: violin and piano duet, by Alonzo Wood and Mrs. Charles Ladle, and a vocal selection by Cyril Nelson, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Harry Bartlett; cornet solo, by George G. Sweeten of Garland. Speakers were Hyrum J. Richards, Joseph N. Sorensen and Bishop Sorensen, who spoke of Mr. Buist's untiring devotion to his mother in her declining years and during her last illness. He was a friend and helper to those in need and was beloved by all who knew him. He labored faithfully as a ward teacher for the past two years. The flowers were profuse and beautiful and were carried by Mr. Buist's nieces. Pallbearers were Charles Buist of Wellsville, Earl A. Buist, John O. Hughes, Harry Bartlett, Gwen Smith and Gilbert Muir. Burial was in the Mendon cemetery where the dedicatory prayer was offered by Joseph C. Sorensen. ~Newspaper Not Listed, 1932.

Gold Star Award Hyrum Leon Buist— Mendon Youth Missing in South America — Word that Corporal Hyrum Leon Buist, 22-year-old son of Mrs. Marilla Buist of Mendon, is missing in action was received today by his mother. Corporal Buist was serving with an army mapping division in Brazil, South America, and was a member of a photo mapping squadron. The telegram from the war department stated he was missing in aircraft, and that the search for crew members of the plane is still continuing. He joined the army air corps in December, 1941, and had received his training in Riverside, California and Laredo, Texas. In February of this year he received his assignment as a radio operator for foreign service, and was sent to South America. Born February 9th, 1921, in Mendon, Corporal Buist is a son of Marilla Richards and the late William Buist. His father died in 1938. He was graduated from South Cache high school prior to joining the armed forces. He has two brothers in the service— Pfc. William L. Buist in Alaska, and Pvt. LaVern R. Buist in Spokane, Washington. Also he has four sisters besides his mother— Mrs. Leland Larsen of Wellsville, Mrs. Merrill Wright of Hyrum, Mrs. LaVar Mohr of Providence, and Thelma Buist of Mendon. ~Newspaper Not Listed, 1943.

James Doig Buist— A resident of Mendon, died yesterday. Mr. Buist was a son of David and Agnes Buist, and had been a resident of Mendon for twenty-five years. Succumbs to Illness— Funeral services for John F. Buist 58 former resident of Mendon who died at his home in Brigham City of heart attack after a year illness, will be conducted in Mendon Monday at one p.m. under direction of Bishop Edgar S. Hancock. Friends may call at the home of Mrs. Marilla Buist, Monday from eleven a.m. until time of service. Mr. Buist was born in Mendon June 19th, 1886, the son of David and Agnes Burdett Buist. He spent his boyhood in Mendon where he attended school and while a youth became employed by the railroad. He married Myrtle Miller of Newton and she with the following children, David Buist, Los Angels; Harvey Buist and Mrs. Bonnie Reeves, Brigham City; and Jack Buist, with the U.S. Army overseas and seven grandchildren survive. ~The Herald Journal, September 29th, 1944, page 1.

Mendon Child is Taken by Death, Mendon— LaFawn Buist, two-year-old daughter of David Glenn and Donna Larsen Buist, of Mendon, died Sunday evening following a lengthy illness. She was born June 24th, 1947, in Logan. Survivors include, her parents, of Mendon, a brother, Michael Glenn, of Mendon, and grandparents, Mrs. Hannah Buist, and Mr. and Mrs. Theo Larsen, all of Mendon, and one great-grandfather, Peter M. Madeline Rose Buist— Daughter of Jim and Annette Carnahan Buist, died at the Logan Regional Hospital 25th June 1999. Marilla Richards Christensen Buist

Death Claims Mendon Lady— Marilla Richards Buist, 80 widow of William Buist, died unexpectedly Friday evening at Mendon. She was born April 12th, 1883 in Mendon, a daughter of Hyrum Thomas Richards and Agnes Muir Richards. She had resided in Mendon throughout her life, except for a few years spent on a homestead in Buist, Idaho. Mrs. Buist had been active in the L.D.S. church, having served in all of the auxiliaries, including president of Y.W.M.I.A., member of Relief Society presidency, magazine representative. She was active in the Mendon camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and had been Mendon City treasurer for two terms. She had attended Cache County schools and Brigham Young College. She was married to William Buist, December 28th, 1910; he died in 1938. Surviving are four daughters and two sons: Mrs. Leland (Viola) Larsen, Wellsville; Mrs. LaVar (Orpha) Mohr, Providence; Mrs. Merrill (Gladys) Wright, Hyrum; LaVell Buist, Idaho Falls; LaVern Buist, Colusa, California; and Mrs. Ora (Thelma) Maughan, Roy. Surviving also are brothers and sisters; Mrs. Agnes Hancock, Centerville; Mrs. Jane Hughes, Garland; Hyrum Richards, Salt Lake City; Mahonri, Mendon; eighteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Vola Fern Buist

Mendon, Utah— Vola Fern Buist, 59 well known Cache educator, died Friday at the University Medical Center in Salt Lake City after an illness of five months. She was born April 10th, 1911 at Mendon, daughter of David Elder and Hannah Baker Buist. She was a resident of Mendon. She received her education at Mendon, South Cache and Utah State University. She was a member of the L.D.S. church and in earlier years sang in the ward choir. She had been a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Sunday school stake boards of both Hyrum and Logan stakes. Since January, 1967, she had been Mendon Ward Librarian. Miss Buist taught special speech classes and was well known for her readings and dramatic work. She taught school at Mendon, Hyrum, Morgan, Adams and Ellis. She was principal at the Ellis School in Logan for twenty-three years and acting principal at Adams one year. For five years she was on the State Curriculum Committee for Language Arts. She belonged to the local, state and was a life member of the National Education Association; P.T.A., member of local, state and a life member of the National Principals Association; Utah Elementary Principals Region One director for one term; active member of Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development; active member of Childhood Education International; active member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Beta Chapter and Alpha Theta State. Survivors include the following brothers and sisters: Annie, Glenn, and Mrs. Fred (Melba) Taylor, all of Mendon; three nieces, twelve nephews. A brother, Earl, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at one p.m. at the Mendon Ward L.D.S. Chapel with Bishop Zeno Andersen in charge. Friends may call at Hall Mortuary in Logan Sunday from six to nine p.m. and at the Mendon Chapel for one hour prior to services Monday.
